"Echoes of Paradise", a conversation with Alejandro Jassan:
Dave:
What can you tell us about the curation process, was there an open call or did you approach them directly with the idea?
Alex Jassan:
When making the proposal, I looked at all the artists and found common threads in their practices—medium, process, concepts, symbols, and motifs. It was surprising to see many of their themes mirrored my interests, like gender equality, body image, and sexuality, while others innovated with their processes, abstraction, and medium.
I thought about the viewers and the experience, aiming for twists, turns, and surprises. Ultimately, I wanted to create a show that sparked new conversations. The Garden of Eden was perfect because it’s a familiar concept but rooted in outdated ideas that don't fit today's world.
Dave: Were you involved with the artist's process, or did they have creative freedom?
Alex Jassan:
A mix of both. For example, one work in the show (depicting Adam and Eve) is a painting I saw at Cynthia Daignault’s studio in 2017, right after her exhibition at the FLAG Art Foundation. It’s a collaboration with Matt Hansel and perfectly illustrates the main concepts: art history, authorship, gender roles, and the body. I knew this piece would encompass many of my interests and was lucky to include it.
Some artists created new works for the show, including Andrew Holmquist, Kyle Coniglio, John TD Murphy, and Herni Paul Broyard. They embraced the concept and took it in different directions based on personal experiences. For example, Kyle Coniglio sees Fire Island as his paradise, where he’s found a community of queer artists and creatives. His painting shows how his paradise has suffered from climate change.
Dave:
What emotions or reactions do you hope visitors will have when they view this exhibition?
Alex Jassan:
I hope visitors learn something new, like how art history shapes our understanding of life or how gender is now more inclusive. I want people to feel intrigued, excited, curious, and leave room to be surprised, confused, or even seduced. This show is meant to start conversations, with plenty of doors to open!
