Thats the gun….
One bullet: 11 lbs and one foot in length.
If fired for too long, will actually STOP the plane dead in the air

i live in madision wisconsin and back in the 80's 90; we had a fleet of A10 at our airport with the national guard and we would be at the end of the runway watching the planes take off for exercise missions.

Slow compaired to other military jets. But it's designed for ground support for our troops.

What is truly terrifying about the Warthog is her stealth is in her quietness. High bypass turbofan engines and a gun that slings Coke bottles on target. You dont know you were the target until you're dead

Troops on the ground love the plane that goes Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. They say it’s the sound of freedom. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out “Grunts in the sky”. When troops on the ground are taking fire from the enemy, when the A-10 shows up, they know they are getting back to base safely.
Also, a video about KC, aka “Killer Chick” is about the woman A-10 pilot that flew that warthog that was so badly damaged and she still made it back to base. ✌🏽

Courtney, the other interesting aspect of the Thunderbolt II, Named after the Thunderbolt fighter from WWII, Is that the pilots talk to the troops on the ground while making their attack runs. The ground forces can call out where they need fire from the A-10s directed and let the pilots know where friendly troops are to prevent friendly fire casualties. Troops on the ground know that machine guns sound and know that they have air support. Oh, and the enemy also knows the sound and knows they are in trouble when they hear it.

Courtney...the A-10 can fire a mix of armor piercing and high explosive incendiary 30mm cannon rounds at a rate of up to 70 rounds per SECOND. There are not many objects (from tanks to warships) that can survive the A-10's attention. Add to that the aircraft's ability to carry up to 16,000 pounds of underwing ordinance, as bombs, missiles, and rockets, and you have a VERY potent ground pounder to support our forces on the ground. As a former paratrooper from the 82nd, I'd rather have a pair of A-10s overhead than an entire squadron on F-35s.

Basically by the time you see it you'll hear it especially at night even in the daytime you'll probably hear those guns ripping off before you see it and by then it's too late it's the perfect platform for ground support it's your greatest savior your angel when you're on the ground that is God sending you an angel to save you when you're on the ground and you're running out of ammo and your box then

If left to politicians, our fighting men and women would have zero close air support. No other plane has ever done what the Warthog can do. Every few years some asshole who has no skin in the game tries to kill the hog..

Aware that this is an older video and my comment probably will never be read, I couldn't help but type a comment for two quick additional points. One, Capt, Kim Campbell, who flew that considerably damaged A-10 back to the base should be recognized for her courage, her calm resolve during a critical and dangerous situation, and her courage to control and successfully return to the airfield. And a side note, she is not only an amazing and respected pilot of the USAF, her call sign was "Killer Chick"!. Second bit of information occurred during my basic training for the USAF. We got to listen to a general and the most poignant statement he made was, "I'd trade my mother for an A-10 in a combat zone". That says it all! Many thanks to all of the current and veterans of our armed forces.

The weapon on the nose of the aircraft is called a cannon. Little known fact about the cannon is that it is positioned a little off center beneath the pilot's position. The reason for this is that it is such a powerful weapon, that when fired, the recoil affects the flight and maneuverability of the aircraft. That fact alone should scare the hell out of any opposing forces that ever encounter the Warthog.

If you actually hear an A-10 firing its GAU-8, one of two things has happened...
1) You were NOT the target, or
2) You are already dead, you just don't know it yet.
