Hey Phil, I have a question. How demanding was Thief 1 back in the day? I'm using a Radeon 7500 PCI and a Pentium 3 600MHz and it still runs slow no matter the resolution, like sub30 fps.

Interesting. I wonder if there are any MS updates newer than what are on the official Microsoft February 2004 update CD.
After the trainwreck of the the newer versions of the unofficial SP# for Windows 98SE, I usually just use the MS update CD, NUSB, DirectX and whatever drivers I need.

I will have to try this one and good to know about the few other things included with this CD.

How “clean” is this compared to the Windows Me update pack? It requires less interactions?

I use to copy the instillation files to my computer after setup from CD, then just changed to installation path in the registry (for when it needs files to NOT ask me the location). By the way, I know XP's version of Outlook Express can still be used to connect to G-mail (and it is so fast), I wonder if it is the same with Windows 98

Can I use this on an existing installation that has some updates installed via Windows Update Restored? Or is it better to use this on a fresh installation?

I might give this a try. I currently don't have much on my 98 machine I tend to use the newest machine I can get something running well on. My modern machine places almost everything I have with my XP machine making up the bulk of the difference. I think I might just backup my save game/settings files and not the whole drive because that likely will be faster for me. And start fresh. I would love to find something a bit more stable. I have had some troubles with my mouse not working on some boots and not others. Also getting it on a home network share would be great especially if I can make it talk to my file server. Thanks for the project idea. You are an inspiration.

I see many enthusiastic comments about this video but I wonder, what's the point of updating all those things? We are using windows 98 for retrogaming, why update internet explorer, media player and make windows heavier to run? Definitely some benchmarks before and after apply the updates would have been more interesting than see: next, next, reboot, next, next next, reboot

And why would I need to install these updates? Windows98 is no longer suitable for surfing the internet. Do retro games need these updates? I don't think so. Maybe someone can answer my questions.

So where is my 98 SE PC..? It might be in this room, I've moved.. Found it, it's under the box of LP's. It has a MSI KT3 Ultra and a Riva TNT 16MB. Not sure about the CPU. Hopefully I got a GPU with a DVI that fit in there, so I can get the picture too. Now got to go sleep.

Still makes me sad that they kind of axed the fantastic boot sounds that 95, 98, ME/2000, and XP had. I forget that they even have them anymore, but I still love the Win95/Win98/Win2k startup sounds despite hearing them way too many times over the years (I used Win2k I got for free from my Uncle's work until XP SP2 came out, blew my 6th grade graduation money on a copy of XP SP2, and felt kind of let down with how it felt like mostly Win2K with a new theme... that I switched back to classic and never turned back).

To be fair, to the people confused by/annoyed at the number of reboots. Yes, they're annoying, but even decent hardware back then with a spinning rust hard drive would boot Win98SE from cold to desktop/login in no time at all. At my dad's office we ran 98SE on computers that came out nearly 10 years after Win2k launched on a closed network for an old database solution, and those minimum XP spec SFF PCs, even with spinning rust, would boot in seconds. Honestly, I wish we still had that setup, or Win2k/XP, instead of upgrading everything to Windows 7 and then 10/11. I'd pay to go back to those for the database (it works on new Windows... but like anything in a command prompt, it's jank at best to try and get "full screen" that they removed after XP) and just have a handful of old ThinkPads running openSUSE for them to use for web browsing/email/etc.

This I'd a major timesaver Phil, much appreciated! The only real way to improve it would be to rebuild the 98se iso to have installed all the updates. Not like nlite that tacks them on, but built right into the base installer. It wouldn't make sense to do that with any version of Windows that wasn't well and truly dead, but 98se definitely is, so… The major questions you have on install really are DX 7 or 9, etc.

Kinda surprised this doesn't mention microsoft plus!. unless that just didn't add much under the hood on 98. I think it didd at least add high color icons and font smoothing.

Otherwise yeah this looks like a neat option for just a fully up to date install as far as official microsoft components goes.

I think it'd be neat if someone tried like, custom building Wine DLLs and things for windows 98/retro PCs to see just how much modern APIs can be supported. I don't suspect anything all that much further for direct3d, but other things maybe.

FYI, I do get a virus alert from Avast for a Trojan from that download, which then gets blocked. There were 3 files flagged, two for Internet Explorer and another bat file. Probably false, and not important for a W98 setup not using the internet. Still, wanted to let you know that my scans showed some concerns.

Edit: It seemed to be disabled at about 1300hrs, 11/8/24 due to "issues with the item's contents".
