As a child born in 1953,
my MOM took me to a beautician biweekly.
My MOM washed my hair at home, detangled and put it up in knots [bantu knots: did not learn that name until lately].
The beautician pressed then, pulled my hair and it was straight

my hair was long and thick with a tight curl [that was called nappy]. Other people told her that I was gonna lose my hair because she allowed the pulling of my hair, that was NOT true.
ANYBODY ELSE KNOW ABOUT THIS???
