Just switched to Wolftooth WT-1 lube, pretty amazing stuff…
ОтветитьThanks for the recommendation. I trust you, so I will look for that lube. I may be dating myself, but back in the day I would break the chain, clean it and soak it in melted wax, let it dry and then reinstall. Boy that was alot of work and I stopped doing that! That was really for my road bikes though.
As far as lubing at the end of a ride, I always did that on my sport bikes after a ride when the chain was hot and the lube would wick right in.
Rock n roll needs to be applied too often. Dumonde Tech is better because it lasts longer and seems to make my chains last longer too.
ОтветитьRock n Roll Gold! It does work much better if you let i
ОтветитьBoeshield T-9 was my go to for years.... IF you are willing to apply it correctly (saturate the chain, then let it sit overnight to cure/dry).
Lately I've been doing homemade paraffin wax/PTFE crockpot blend, but it's a lot of work for how short it lasts, so I'll probably go back to Boeshield.
Ahh, a man of culture.
I've been using Rock 'n roll (dry lube) for years.
A tube lasts for months. I can't be bothered to buy the big bottles.
You're actually applying it exactly the way Rock N Roll recommends, letting the lube flow onto the chain at the cassette while spinning the pedals. You need to be a bit liberal using Gold, it's a lubricant and cleaner.
I've been using Pro Gold Prolink for years but have recently switched to RnR Gold, really like it so far. I was going to try the Muc Off which is getting great reviews, but just too expensive.
I just stared using Rock and Roll Gold this season based on a recommendation by my LBS. I like it. Lasts for a long time and my drive train is cleaner. I used to lube after every ride now I can go every other or third ride with this stuff.
ОтветитьHave gone back to rock n roll after trying something else and rock n roll IS the best I have used.chain stays cleaner and the shifting is smoother and well just better especially on a 1x 12.
ОтветитьMy chains on my road bike and mountain bikes last considerably longer since I started using paraffin wax in a crock pot. Every 2-3 MTB rides, and about 200-300km on my road bike for re-waxing. Much cleaner than any wet lube too. Once you get setup and establish a routine, it takes no longer than degreasing and applying wet lube. Heaps cheaper than Rock and Roll.
ОтветитьIt has been my go to lube for years now
ОтветитьGold on the road bike, extreme on the mtb.
ОтветитьAkin to starting an oil thread on my BMW forums, this is a contentious and emotional topic for some. I like R&R Gold and have used it in the past (highly recommended by my LBS), however any oil based lubricant leaves my chain filthy after one ride and I'm a 100% road cyclist. I want my drivetrain as pristine as possible and have switched to Speedmaster wax that I supplement with Squirt when necessary. Even then, with too much Squirt applied things begin to get dirty after logging a few hours and stripping the chain to antiseptic cleanliness before dunking it in the Speedmaster is a royal PITA. I don't really pay any mind to drivetrain noise so that's not a factor. Clint, how is your drivetrain so clean using oil based lubricants or was this video shot right after chain & cassette maintenance? Love your work and appreciate the quality content you provide.
ОтветитьI have tried it and did not care for it. To me it did not last very long. I really like Line Dry Bike Lubricant with Teflon. Last a long time and is super clean.
ОтветитьLove this stuff... Great for Texas
ОтветитьWas using finishline dry lube which was ok. Then went to tri-flow, which was junk. Now using Rock and Roll gold, which is the best I've used. I use it on my road bike for dry conditions and i find application ever 100km keeps things nice.
ОтветитьHey Clint, I’d recommend lubing the lower part of the chain, between the lower pulley wheel and chainring, as opposed to from the top. This is because it’s the inside of the rollers that contact the gears, not the outside. This also means when you wipe off, you will only wipe of the excess on the outer plates, thus lowering your need to lube so often, as it will deter dirt sticking to the chain.
Thanks for the vid!!
Good lube, been using for years. Would like to hear if people are using this on their emtbs too or something else?
ОтветитьI've used both the R&R Gold and Extreme lubes, but I'm now exclusively using the Extreme. It doesn't stay quite as clean as the gold, but it runs quieter and stays quiet a lot longer. Prior to R&R, I would wear out a few chains a season, roughly 200 hrs for mtn bike, 2000 miles for road bike. Since changing to R&R I still can't measure any chain wear after nearly 2 years (500+ hrs mtn bike, 15,000 miles road bike).
ОтветитьRock N Roll gold and Finish Line Dry (very similar to Rock N Roll) are my favorites too, agree with your conclusions.
ОтветитьI used Gold for a few seasons then switched to Wax lube this year. Same issue -chain couldn't last a ride with out getting noisy, i'm going back to the Gold!
ОтветитьRemember to shake before applying. The good stuff is in the dregs. 😉
ОтветитьReading through the comments I see I'm the only one who hates R&R gold. I was told it was the best. Used as directed and after about 15 miles on one ride I legit though my bottom bracket bearing took a crap. Found my chain completely dry. Tried it again but much more liberal application and didn't wipe it off. Same exact result. Tried muc-off ceramic dry lube and the chain never actually dried. Turned black and grimey in one ride. Switched to the tried and true white lightening clean ride and that solved all my problems. Never switching again. Hands down the best lube for me and my riding.
ОтветитьI've been using SCC Slick All Conditions lube for a while now. It's the best I've used so far. Lasts a long time and is very, very clean.
ОтветитьAfter trying Muc-Off, Squirt lube and Peaty's, I went back to Squirt lube. It really does the trick for me.
ОтветитьI've been using Rock N Roll Gold for a couple of months and I do like it it does make pedalling smooth and it doesn't pick up gunk on the chain when riding but I think I haven't cleaned the chain and cassette etc for a while so I am wiping black crap off my chain so probably need to give a special birthday present soon....
ОтветитьAppreciate the information ✌️
ОтветитьI use the Rock n Roll extreme for all my bikes. It stays on the chain a little longer, especially in the wet.
ОтветитьI’ve just rediscovered the rock and roll gold lube. I used it a few years ago. Because it cleans and lubes I use it after each ride. I’ve never had a wax lube where I didn’t hear chain squeak at the end of a long ride. Muc off builds up on the chain and looks dirty after a few applications. I follow the directions for the rock and roll gold and apply it liberally (not drip it on each link) then wipe it off thoroughly. I find that chains last a bit longer with this stuff. I use the Park chain measuring tool frequently about once a month. I think it’s the best stuff out there! I believe the key is to use it every ride, especially on gravel and dirt.
ОтветитьI use muc off cleaner and then the rock n roll lube
ОтветитьYou can use it to stop doors from squeaking too
ОтветитьJust ordered this.
ОтветитьIs there a reason why that people don't use graphite? Now you can get graphite and liquid form or powder form. Now that to me would be the best lube, well simply because it's pretty much Lead, and the more you rotate your gears with the chain will mash it up to even finer particles. Don't get me wrong I'm just getting started in this. But I remember my dad using graphite lubrication or something on his Harleys chain.
ОтветитьIs it for dry conditions too. I was using a dry lube that was making my drivetrain sounds like a rusty old push mower
ОтветитьThank you I bought me a little bottle and love it! Noticed it stayes on longer!
ОтветитьWe love your bike maintenance videos. Thanks so much ! Austin. TX
ОтветитьI use the rock n roll extreme (blue
ОтветитьI used to love rock n roll gold lube. I bought a new bottle recently and something changed. It lasts maybe 20 miles in dry clean rides. I ditched it and went back to prolink. All lubes leave black gunk, including squirt. If you don't see anything black, you probably wiped it all off after lubing. The key is to know how much to wipe off.
ОтветитьThe best lube I have ever used.
ОтветитьI tried squirt a few months ago and it was such a PITA to clean the chain enough to put it on, then it made a huge mess on my chainring and guide wheels that I got fed up and cleaned it all off. I bought rock n roll and we’ll give that a try. With 3 bikes to maintain for my family I just can’t dedicate the amount of time that wax needs to be effective. Rock n roll seems a lot easier to apply and maintain. BTW your video on removing a Shimano crank arm helped me regrease my bottom bracket, really appreciate the informative videos!
ОтветитьInterested to see if you’ve heard anything negative about Muc Off. A few videos have talked about it leaving a coating that gets dirty and you can’t remove. Like drive train breaking, bad. I’ll still with Rock and Roll but feel like it wears off so fast.
ОтветитьWax lubes aren't clean. Yes cleaner. Looking cleaner but just hold a white paper towel on your waxed chain after just a short ride on dusty roads. You will get black marks on your towel. The benefit of wax is that it dont pull the dirt inside your chain like oil do.
ОтветитьHey Clint. I value your real world expertise. Any updates on this lube; is it still what you currently use?
ОтветитьI wipe my chain with a rag and apply RnR Gold lube after every ride. I'm sure that's more than necessary but my chain remains super clean and quiet. I've gotten good at squirting it on my chain evenly while running the chain backwards. Because it's not expensive I just consider it extra insurance that my drive train is clean and lubricated.
ОтветитьIt's been a while since you've put this out. Any thoughts about jumping on the hot wax bandwagon and is it even appropriate for mounting biking or gravel in mixed weather conditions?
ОтветитьI've only/mostly used Rock N Roll Gold so I may be bit biased, but I never have had any issues other than satisfaction. I'd like to know what you got to say about the other Rock N Roll lubes. Thanks.
ОтветитьI’ve been using the mucoff dry for a while and works great. I used this rock n roll recently by chance. I was away from home, forgot to lube the chain before I left and ended up stopping in a shop that had this one. Sure enough worked great and the chain is still clean after a 2+ hour ride. I was surprised by that. Great stuff
ОтветитьThanks for affirming what I suspected. I've been using it and am gonna keep on.
ОтветитьBeen riding for 35 years and tried every lube application around then I found this a couple years ago. Hands down the best lube ever. You dont have to drip on each link. Follow the instructions saturate the chain and wipe off. Chain runs smooth and stays relatively clean. often need to apply it more often but its easier to apply than oil lubes. Works best if you lube the day before you ride but i have done it many times just before. Its the only lube I use.
ОтветитьMuch off dry ceramic makes a mess, leaves black gunk on chain ring, cassette ang jockey wherls
