I like to reduce lyrics as much as possible, ideally down to slogans. Often the chorus lyrics will also appear in verses, with the chorus serving to focus on that specific phrase.
Even if the music isn't very melodic, this sort of minimalism lends itself to making everything a hook intended to get stuck in the listener's head. Even if the style is too harsh/off-putting, if it becomes an earworm people will end up having to come back to it.
I disagree that a song needs a chorus though. Plenty of hardcore songs don't bother with one.
Or, put on Triumph by Wu-Tang. That track doesn't need a chorus, it's just solid verses.
well said
ОтветитьBest way to make your title line memorable is bookend the chorus. Use it in the first and last line.
ОтветитьGreat content. I don’t think it would reduce watch-duration or engagement etc if you divided things into chapters with handy titles, or at the very least sum up your acronym tips at the very end of the video. Again, terrific content!
There is just so much on-screen text, you cover a lot of ground, and i really want to deeply grasp your (heyo) central themes. Just a tad confusing sometimes when CTU flashes on screen as you say “ *Create That Unique*moment “. Like oh that’s what CTU stands for, wait, whoops, you get the idea. Only belaboring this point cause I care and your stuff is v helpful. Had a similarly squinty time making sure what the RVC method was in that video.
Good work fella. I'm a singer songwriter, 60 years old now. Just coming into my prime 👍
ОтветитьPlot twist: Arctic Monkeys no longer write songs with a Chorus.
ОтветитьTell all this to Dance Gavin Dance
ОтветитьWe're not gonna take it, oh no, we aint gonna take it.
ОтветитьYou have to live a song before it can be written, I have never written a song that didn’t have some meaning to my life and I have tons & tons of both bad & good experiences to channel my inspiration from.
I never had any knowledge of all the theory surrounding songwriting, I just picked up a guitar, learned a few chords and started writing songs, the melodies have always been in my head since i was a small child I just learned how to put the melodies to words and music.
Great video, I find this very helpful in learning different techniques surrounding songwriting, I have always just used improve as my main technique, I just keep singing things until I hear something that sounds good. Thanks for sharing.
I don't disagree with this. If it's your intention to convey an idea with a specific set of words, that's fine.
However, a song doesn't have to have meaningful lyrics for it to be a good song. Many musicians are crap at lyrics, and they've written great songs. Jeff Lynne is famous for thinking up words in the studio just before he lays down vocals, admits that oftentimes they mean nothing, and he's the creative mind behind ELO.
There are many songs based on gibberish, and they tend to have extremely memorable choruses.
Again, I agree with you to a point. If you are trying to create a strong, meaningful lyric, then your advice is sound.
It just seems that it would be limiting to say that because said lyric is not up to that challenge that it could actually 'ruin' the chorus or the song. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a lyric that 'just rhymes.' I'd hate to think that someone is trashing a decent song just because they can't come up with a 'meaningful' chorus lyric.
I might go further and suggest that the opposite is sometimes true: bone headed lyrics can be awfully memorable and effective, especially within the context of their songs.
Viz: Gloria, G-L-O-R-I-A, Gloria
No amount of gussying is going to make that a better chorus.
I don't often have subjects that I want to put into words, it often starts with an approximation of how the lyrics sound like on the riff and I clear up the fog with words and make up something like that. It's like I have to find words that match how it sounds in my head and how it's gonna rhyme, and the subject comes by itself like I discovered what it's about. The song reveals itself to me in a way
Ответитьshouldn't it be CTUM? since moment is a separate word
Ответитьi've never made a chorus, i like songs to just flow and not repeat sections so much or at all
i should try to make a song with a traditional structure tho, just for experimentations sake
Thanks so much!!!
ОтветитьI love your videos! You’re legend
ОтветитьThis is wrong kirt colbain did it best no one knows what he ment
ОтветитьMost #1 hit songs are so stupid I don’t know how to write something so stupid …but I’m pretty sure my songs are more stupid … so have to figure out how to be the right kinda of stupid …weezer - Beverly Hills for example …I freaking love that song but I wouldn’t write something so dumb …how can I learn to be that kinda dumb ?
ОтветитьIm so proud of my choruses ngl, and even my songwriting and lyrics and vocal melodies recently, like I remember I the music I use to make sounded fine instrumentally, but fell apart at the lyrics and vocals. Ive definitely improved ALOT
ОтветитьThis is actually an awesome tip Tony! Hope all is good brothaman. -Sal
ОтветитьThis is a good one I watched it a few times. I always want to change the lyrics or redo the vocal after the song is mixed. 😂 also I’ve been able to sit in on studio sessions and overhearing producer’s thoughts I felt like he was talking about my songs and I made changes to them. Maybe you could do more on your background and opinions about music
ОтветитьHEY DO I HAVE TO WATCH EVERY VIDEO OF YOURS OR ONE WILL DO TO WRITE SONG.
ОтветитьKanye: scoopdy poopty scoopdy whoop
I still havent found the context to that song lol
I love this content
ОтветитьYou rock! Thank you brother for your generosity and brilliant insights! Mgratitude! - Guy 🙂
ОтветитьThanx maan: inspiration,
ОтветитьThank you - great stuff
ОтветитьGood to hear you mention Arctic Monkeys a lot. Their hit song "Do I Wanna Know" is unaccountably great. I mean, better than it seems possible for such a song to be. He leans into the singalong pub song in the most marvelous way. It seems crazy how well and how poetically the lyrics paint such an immediate and relatable picture of...well, people know what the song is about for them.
ОтветитьI started here and I hope you find a girl who looks like a Bird
For you have fade away from here
Don't you cry my baby girl
I whisper things that damage you and you cry like a girl, who fade away with Apple Pies
Where is home and where is Rome?
So far away from here my girl
Can't you hear my little dove?
Hissing like the Cat who fade away
And now she sleeps with a blank stare
Where is home and where is Rome?
I passed out where I belong
Swimming through the lakes of time
Dreaming of a better time
When you whispered in my ears
Where is home and where is Rome?
I forgot things that hurt my soul
And now I sleep with a blank stare
No Garden Gnome will haunt my dreams
Where is Rome and where is Home?
No Garden Gnome will sleep
No Garden Gnome with Scream
No Garden Gnome will Sing
Congratulations on 30k
ОтветитьAnother excellent video!
ОтветитьGreat advice
ОтветитьOh my god I’ve never had this kind of writers block before, cause I always used to just write for myself when it felt right, now I have to wrote multiple songs a day for others. And so I just want you to know, your channel, SPECIFICALLY your channel, is saving my effing life. The video layouts and colours and vids and examples and everything are perfect for my ADHD, no fluff. I am just so thankful. Thank you.
ОтветитьI hate songs with title phrases as the chorus. It just sounds like they're advertising the song itself. The lyric can be in the song ("Come As You Are", "Man In the Box", "Wicked Garden", "Yesterday", etc.), but having it as the hook just sounds, again, like an advertisement for the song itself. "This is the song you're listening to! Request it live!"
For me, songs are poems made to express ideals, and those ideals can be all summed up in a meaningful title which isn't uttered at all within the song itself. Does that make it harder to search or request the song? Sure. But it also didn't stop "Interstate Love Song" from being a phenomenal song which also hit #1, if that's all you care about.
Good stuff!

ОтветитьGood vid and I've been writing for years but I just don't get the Artic Monkeys.
Ответитьmy man is an Arctic Monkeys fan
ОтветитьThe Ace of Spades, the Ace of Spades 😂🤘🏻😎
Ответить🙏🙏🙏
Ответитьproblem with some of these, these choruses, some of them, really really suck. A famous song, but the chorus isn't what was special, especially those swing line choruses.
ОтветитьYour really heavenly sent
ОтветитьI never seen a video teach too much in a video so short lol . wow! im blown away . thank you so much!
Ответитьim watching all of your videos and I aoporeciate it very much. Thank you
ОтветитьGood ❤❤❤ ideas thank you
ОтветитьI like the ideas of the videos you have uploaded, even though I tend to write rap songs. So I have a question, my approach is to keep my rap choruses vague and simple. Is that a good approach as I add more details in my verses?
ОтветитьYou are absolutely brilliant. This channel is a dream.
