Should You Buy 80's Overdrive? - 80's Overdrive Review - The Golden Bolt

The erratic behavior of other cars is responsible for 80 % of my failed races. I can also confirm that the game crashed me multiple times during career gameplay. As for the spelling mistakes, the creators are Polish. This is a game I really want to love. I quite enjoyed it on my 3DS, but I felt dissappointed on Switch. The driving feels slow and the career mode would need some more balancing. Having to grind lower-tier races and "wash cars" just because "Jennifer decided to change lanes three times in a row" feels degrading.

I donm't get why all these retro inspired games don't actually use real sprite scaling, rather than polygons? it would be far more authentic.

For Nostalgia, its a good upgrade reminder. For a FULL reboot new era upgrade of retrograde 80s, it does fall short in the "professional" realm, but not by far. My only complaint is when you hit "anything" its almost impossible to catch back up to the other drivers you're trying to pass. You have to drive near perfect and barely swerve in order to do so though (while not hitting anything else). Other than that, its a good cheap buy. It won't be remembered like the golden classics many many years from now which will fall into the "forgotten" zone. But it will be seldomly remembered for what it tried to ressurrect of a dead era. While a little frusterating, I'm still happy with it.

This game could have the potential to be a 16bit trackmania style if they gave a good track editor. The visual of the game are incredible but im hesitating to give this a try with the flaws mentionned 🥴

Horizon Chase Turbo seems to be the better game easily.

The 3DS version is better.

I like the game. Still prefer outrun but this is a good alternative. I really line the music and aesthetics of this game. But i still have to say i would return the game if that would be possible on the Eshop. The game crashes constantly on my switch. At first i was worried that somethings wrong with my switch but it is the only game that does that. Sometimes it takes some time but at other times it happens like 3times in 5minutes

Horizon chase turbo is great

Got it for 2.5€ on the 3DS, and I love it, the 3D effect is amazing and really bring something to the game visually.
I don't see the point of paying 10€ on Switch though...

You should re-review this game now that they released an update that fixes those problems, and it feels SOOOOOO much better now!

I've been playing the 3DS version, it's pretty good. It doesn't have the emoji's appear over racers which is honestly a good thing. It's been alot of fun but the damage another racers car mission is really annoying. The 3DS version doesn't have the random cars constantly changing lanes, they only do it if they are overtaking.

imo this game is more like CRUISIN USA than outrun

Controls are terrible, especially compared to games like for example Super Hang-On or Outrun, just to name a few. Every input in this poorly coded game feels delayed and washed out, while even the slightest input mattered in the old games. Track layouts are just bad and boring, turning feels off, transitions are ugly. And this piece of software slows down when showing 2D trees... I don't think we have to talk about good coding practice. Imagine how good hardware usage and how well programmed the old games were, on home consoles and arcade. It is just a shame that anyone would pay for this game. If you like the soundtrack, well, it's ok. I got this game for free and wouldn't bother to play it again. It's a punch in the face.

Definitely tempted at $5, complaints aside. Dunno if you've played Slipstream, but that's a great arcade racing inspired game.

Got it for 2,50€ und love it. Yeah the traffic sucks and feeling of speed isnt that good but still enjoyable at least for me.

The game really isn't bad, dude. You're looking too much into it. And, incidentally, the "Cha ching" noise when you spend money or collect an item on the road is the same sound as when you get XP in Fallout 4. I wonder if Bethesda knows this game ripped them off.

Those graphics and wide lanes reminds me of top gear on SNES I love that game and the music too

If you like this setting I highly recommend Slipstream. It's very similar and gives a lot of fun.

Yes I get that game for myself is that I am will in to save up the money maxing out Martin McFly's DeLorean parody De Loan. Martin McFly drives faster than 88MPH.

So far what I like is the time attack mode nearly missing traffic to add more time to the clock. It's on sale this week and I got it for less than $2

I respectfully disagree agree with most of this video. I LOVE this game. The emojis are fun and let's you know if the other players crashed or are getting slowed down. I like that because I know I will have a great chance of catching up to the other racers. The music is a 10 out of 10. Every track is amazing. The cars in this game look so cool and I actually like the other pedestrian 🚸 cars swerving between multiple lanes. It makes it a challenge and I do not hit another vehicle in every race I play. Maybe every four races? I love that you can upgrade your car with steering, NOS, and bumpers. Love the colors that I can pick. Love the steering in this game and I do think it's worth the $10, but I actually had it on my wishlist and got it for $3. Absolutely LOVE playing this game. Oh, and the tracks and visuals are BEAUTIFUL! I love every part of this game and have absolutely ZERO complaints.

I would say that 80's Overdrive is really good tribute to the classics like Outrun or Lotus Esprit. You will find there adrenaline racing, challenging difficulty, useful upgrades, police chases and side quests. The truth is that the civil drivers act like crazy and it feels like your opponents are cheating but it is a part of challenging gameplay. I was only missing local co-op. It should be a part of game like this.

Good review but this game is good actually..

I bought this for less than £3 back in September, I never noticed the typo and have re-visited it today, it's now been corrected, also I had a few races and the controls seem fine to me. It might be worth you while re-visiting the game to see if any of you grievences have changed, good review.

That is the most realistic video game mechanic I have ever seen

I recently got it on a Steam sale, but unfortunately, all you criticisms are still there. And I don't even think that it's bad dead zone on analog controls, it's just not analog at all. At some point it just switches from "no input" to "all the way". So I switched to using digital controls which makes it slightly better, because digital represents the controls better. But all in all it's rather disappointing, especially, since they got many things right. Would be less disappointing, if everything was bad.

Very cool graphics and excellent music. The gameplay is a lot about avoiding traffic, so investing in better steering is very important. It's not an easy game and the progression takes practice to get into, but it's so representative of the arcade racers of 30 years ago that I highly recommend it to gamers over 40 looking for a nostalgic blast that's worth your time. If you're looking for vintage style games with a vibrant 80's style, consider these : Huntdown, 198X, Shakedown Hawaii, Crossing Souls and this one. You'll thank me later!
