Gohan, now a budding scholar and living a peaceful life with his wife Videl and their daughter Pan, is focused on his academic pursuits. However, this tranquility is shattered when Frieza is revived using the Dragon Balls and returns to Earth, seeking revenge on Goku. With Goku and Vegeta off training on Beerus's planet, it falls to Gohan and the remaining Earth defenders to hold off Frieza's powerful army.

Despite his efforts, Gohan is no match for the newly empowered Frieza. However, his battle isn't in vain—Gohan's ki serves as a signal for Goku, allowing him and Vegeta to return to Earth using Instant Transmission. Upon arrival, the two Saiyans reveal the results of their intense training, displaying their newfound powers and ultimately defeating Frieza once again. Frustrated by his own weakness and inability to protect his loved ones, Gohan vows to train harder and grow stronger.

Later, Goku visits Gohan with news of the Tournament of Power, a multiverse tournament where the stakes are the survival of entire universes. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Gohan agrees to fight for Universe 7 to ensure its survival. Once the tournament begins, Gohan quickly finds himself in the midst of a cunning assault by Frost and Frieza, the latter supposedly an ally of Universe 7. Sensing something amiss, Gohan deduces that Frieza's betrayal is a ruse to deceive Frost. Reluctantly, Gohan plays along with the plan, leading to Frost's elimination and solidifying Frieza's loyalty, at least temporarily, to Universe 7.
