The mayor wanted her to fix his fucked up creation. Instead, she began admiring him. It's so sick and twisted all around. And the fact that (as I saw in another comment) the world has mostly healed already, he doesn't even need to run autodale like this anymore. He's trying to preserve the old world, rather than allow humanity to adapt to the new one.

The sad thing is, The Mayor could have possibly gotten acceptance for this circle of life without all the lies. We all as humans accept that we will die someday, and we take actions throughout our life to make sure our offspring are able to thrive.

The reality painted in Autodale, while much more morbid, isn't all that different. If the citizens knew that they'd eventually become fuel for the goddess/machine hybrid that keeps their society running, they'd still probably willingly sacrifice themselves in old age to allow their offspring to continue to prosper. No need to try to fabricate a fake utopia with a bunch of lies to garner acceptance.

I’m glad this dystopian city has a purpose to its madness. Too many times these kinds of fictional places are crazy just for the heck of it without any sense to it.

I don't know where to begin. I'm just randomly theorizing about One Piece (yeah, I'm one of them) & and I start to think that the final boss is a cyborg and that IMU is actually an acronym for: Immortal Machine Uranus. So, before I get beat up on Redditt, I decide to plug in 'immortal machine' into Google, just to see if I can find an old book or film that could have been the inspiration to support my budding theory. All I see is this, I click this, I watch this and I'm now typing this comment because I am blown away. This was masterful story-telling & direction, I'm now a fan and if you do not already watch One Piece, get on that because you might already know what it is.

It seems as if the mayor was desperately hoping for the girl to devise a plan in order to alter the current functioning of Autodale but was eventually disappointed by the girl's response.

If only the Mayor talked to the Shadow

There comes a time that a false world made to protect it from the world outside, no longer needs itself to exist anymore. The apocalyptic world it once was is gone. The trees, the lakes, the world has healed. And yet even so, the Mayor feeds this Immortal so that they can continue to propagate this destructive cycle. This is truly what it means to deal with Order vs Freedom.

so my head cannon so far. World falls into ruin. inventor finds a wilting godess. Seeing that said godess is able to hold the sickness at bay creates a city. To sustain the citys protector the godess they need to use human remains and blood since he cannot find an alternative.

To do so he creates a police state with thoes no longer of child rearing age and with fully grown children being killed and fed to the machines that keep the godess alive. The mayor does not like it and is still trying to find a solution and tries to recruit this girl to his cause but she decides to continue the system

I love the choice to have her eyes bloodshot red and the robots remain monotone. It's so common to make evil robots have red eyes, but there's something so sinister to have them remain purely white.
