i'm so glad you liked it! this was my favorite book of 2014 and it has stuck with me all these years later. i just finished her most recent book which i was highly anticipating, and it didn't let me down whatsoever. it just confirmed that she is definitely one of my favorite writers today. absolutely brilliant at character study and also navigating timelines and making you turn the page, even if she doesn't write traditional mystery/thrillers. there's always enough left unsaid that keeps you reading.

OMG KATIE I'm so so happy that you enjoyed it! I think you'll like LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE as well because it's more similar to BIG LITTLE LIES and it has a little more momentum. The writing is just as wonderful but I think it's more "fun"... if you can count this as fun hahaha

Good to know take a break review it later unless you think that Ng is really that good.

I just finished this book two days ago, so I'm definitely glad to see someone else talking about it. I agree on the marketing being off, though for me, it felt less like the typical family-centered book too (despite all the familiar tropes) in part because of the pseudo-mystery. It's such a hazy combination that is hard to describe without basically reciting the whole book, but I really loved it. But I also have no idea if I can read the book again because seeing how everything came together was such a punch in the gut emotionally. I felt so drained when I was done, so I'm kind of relieved that it'll be some time before my hold on Little Fires Everywhere gets through.

Totally agree about the writing! Not once did it feel like a debut novel. I am amazed at the commentary on racism and sexism, the character study and family portrait Celeste Ng was able to paint, and the emotional impact she managed to elicit from me in just under 300 pages. She is fantastic. This book was not as much about liking/disliking characters as it was about understanding where they were coming from.

A story about families is absolutely what I need. It reminds me a bit of “Commonwealth” by Ann Patchett, in terms of flashbacks. I will definitely be buying a copy and reading this. Thanks for such a detailed review!!

I'm pretty sure I gave this four stars out of five all on the account of the unlikable father. Not a very supportive father or husband. I guess he felt threaten by his wife's ambition but he was self absorb and super subconscious of what others thought of him.

I was drawn to this book because of the setting being in Ohio. I grew up in a small town in Ohio and had not one person of Asian descent in my grad class.

I agree with all your thoughts on this one! I loved this book when I read it last year. A book I feel is similar to this one..but I actually think I enjoyed even more was Shelter by Jung Yun. It was a little darker and little faster paced, but still had that emotion in it. But this one was one of my favorites from last year and I can't wait to read her new book.

Glad you liked it! I gave it 5 stars, brilliant and deeply evocative imo, and I can't wait to read Little Fires Everywhere, so I'd definitely like to know your thoughts once you read it.

I really loved Everything I Never Told You, it was one of my 2016 favorite books and I also read Little Fires Everywhere recently and it kinda keeps the same style but author starts to be more bold, like in Everything it was more of conclusions and impacts and realizations where in Fires it's never really concluded or reflected on, it's more like it's here and now you decide how you should feel about it. I gave both 5 stars but if I had to pick I think I liked Everything more

Loved Everything I Never Told You, and really excited to check out her new book. Have you checked out a book called Killers of the Flower Moon? It's a great book that has thrilling and emotional elements to it.

Please read The Way the Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald. I think you would like it. A murder mystery with a redemptive ending. So well written. I love books that take me away and this one did.

Loved both books, but maybe her debut a little tiny bit more! Little Fires Everywhere is actually more fast-paced than her debut, but still a deep character study. It's her forte!

Just finished Little Fires Everywhere, and loved it so much, that I checked out Everything I Never Told You immediately afterwards. I hope I like it just as much. Glad to hear you liked it. A book that is powerful, and still has somewhat of a thriller/mystery vibe is Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew Sullivan.

I completely agree with your assessment about how the book was pitched.  I just read this myself, and I thought it was going to be more of a mystery.  I LOVED it and was really moved by it as well - but it certainly wasn't a thriller!

I just started a mystery book club at the library I work at. In your opinion does this book have enough mystery elements for a discussion? I'll probably read it for my own enjoyment though. It sounds good and is set in Ohio where I live. :)

I am currently reading Little Fires Everywhere and really enjoying it so far. I think it is even better than Everything I Never Told You, but I have a couple of years distance from that reading experience, so I don't have vivid memories about specifics in terms of characterization or style. I do, however, remember the scene where you find out how Lydia died from her perspective and it took my breath away. I actually felt a physical response to the scene, it was so beautiful and sad. One of my most vivid reading memories in recent years.

If you haven't...a GREAT horror author who happens also to be a woman is Ania Ahlborn...I just read "The Devil Crept In" and I loved it, it was emotional and creepy as hell!! It deals with loss, friendship, and abusive home lives...and it was damn creepy!! Also, "Brother" by the same author is even better, and also scary!!

I listen to reviews on book tube, look and see if my library has them via audio, and if so I add them to my list (holds list or wish list). I always to back to the review video and also look on goodreads before I read, and then after.

I just finished it yesterday 19/1/20 and thought it was great I never read the blurb of books before I read them so wasnt anticipating a different kind of book I think the first line "Lydia is dead" iand the line that follows is one of the best first lines Ive read (although I suppose it resembles A Christmas carol )
