When Netflix is Worse than Hallmark

I was just kinda bored by Merry Gentlemen, there was no real conflict at all! No beginning, middle or end. It just kinda happened

I dunno about any of them tbh. I mean hallmark, is known for cheesy PG "clean" romance. I don't get why Netflix would try to be a competition for them. I would've liked Netflix to do its own thing and be a little saucy. Soooo many books out there have holiday romances with some hot scenes. I mean Bridgerton definitely has a few, so Netflix couldn't make a holiday rom-com with some lusty bits?

The only Hallmark-esq Christmas movie I love and will watch is While You Were Sleeping, but I greatly enjoyed your review of these.

I felt weird watching Hot Frost, because the whole time I was remembering the "Born hot Yesterday" video the Pop Culture Detective made. So every joke felt creepy, even the ones I made while watching.

Dancer girl continuing her parents' legacy by making extremely poor financial decisions had me stressing

Hot Frosty made me ask a lot of questions like; "who made him?" and "Is he based on someone else and if so, does that make him some kind of magic clone?"

What these three movies want women to know:

1. The Merry Gentlemen
You must always be the one that makes big sacrifices for the ones you love, even if it is abandoning any potential for career success for saving you family from their shit and staying for a man in a small-rural town where there are basically no opportunities.

2. Hot Frosty
The best way to build your ideal partner is to literally mother and teacher him into the perfect man.

3. Our Little Secret.
It doesn’t matter if your partner manipulates and guilt-trips you into a relationship by using the trauma of your mum’s death as a reason to be together, it means that he will go through any lengths to prove his love for you. And if you reject him, you are the bad one cause how dare you.

I watched Hot Frosty with some friends thinking it was just gonna be a fun silly time but we all ended up really uncomfortable with how childlike the guy was acting most of the time. At least this is the first time I've ever seen the "born sexy yesterday" trope (in this case literally) applied to a man, so diversity win I guess?
The highlight of the movie was definitely the cop duo. I feel like the movie was at least 20% relying on reminding you of better things the actors have been in and hoping that will make you like it more lol

Honestly went into Hot Frosty because I was bored but ended up genuinely loving it, like it reminded me of a nicer version of edward scissorhands, that and it sent me down a rabbit hole of more Lacey hallmark movies- it all was just a good time.
Our little secret, I liked everything except Logan, he just was kinda unbearable to me.
Merry gentlemen... I was scrolling through my phone through out most of it lowkey, like I only liked the stripper side characters, they should have had her start up a dance school or something, but no, she's going to continue coaching this band of merry strippers?

I really enjoyed Christmas with you (2022). It was an often used premise done very well. Aimee Garcia and Freddie Prinze Jr. have loads of chemistry. The music was great. Side characters were super charming. And I liked how it embraced the leads being Latinos.

Another good one was One december night (2021). The romance was more of a subplot but still worked very well. And the protagonist were former singing duo Peter Gallagher and Bruce Campbell. It had everything I like about these movies. And great music .

There is a movie that came out just before COVID hit called Anna and the Apocalypse. It is a scottish, zombie, christmas musical and has no business being as good as it is

The Merry Gentlemen = the Christmas terrible revamp of the "Full Monty"

I’m gonna rant about a stripper movie that does a good job for ideas on how you could do that- Full Monty.
It’s about men who feel isolated and emasculated for one reason or another- failing to be the dad your son needs, feeling inadequate about your place in social class, feeling emasculated because of your weight, being boxed in by racial stereotypes about men, insecurity about being gay… and then there’s hot dumb guy who is hung and gay and confident and doesn’t seem to care much about anything but I guess we needed balance.
And the fact that they’re not all Magic Mike bodies works because they decide they’re going to earn money by being authentically themselves and learn to be friends for each other and gain confidence along the way feeling comfortable in their own skin.
It’s a rare positive masculinity story that talks to working class disgruntled men at their level.
Like I’m not saying every stripper movie HAS to do that, but that is how you can give that premise a bit of a brain and a heart that’s not just get remember this hot guy from 20 years ago? He’s still hot. Let’s get wholesome!

Me & my mom watched Hot Frosty (my pick cause I saw people did reviews on it) & Merry Gentlemen (my mom’s pick cause Chad Michael Murray). The first third of Hot Frosty my mom was politely begging me to pick something else while I was loving the cringe, but I actually ended up loving it because you could tell the actors were playing into the silliness. Also I ended up actually becoming invested in the story and was crying at the end (the movie fully manipulated me and I didn’t even know it). After that my mom was excited for Merry Gentlemen (thinking it would be better) but was very quickly disappointed. We both agreed (my mom doesn’t analyze movies like I do but even she agreed) there was no plot. I fully checked out for 30 minutes and didn’t miss a thing. We both love Chad & Britt as actors and while their chemistry was really good (in our opinion) they were just weirdly close very early on and it just felt completely unearned. I feel like 2 shirtless Chad scenes could’ve been sacrificed for the sake of adding more plot.

BASICALLY, as crazy as it sounds Hot Frosty was the better of the 2😳
