It might seem extreme to those who don't experience debilitating eyestrain... but (at home) I’ve resorted to using a 42" (FullHD LCD TV) screen and standing 2-3m away depending on what I’m doing. For me, this completely resolves the fatigue resulting from prolonged focusing & convergence of the eyeballs. Secondly, I make sure the background wall is at least as bright as the screen. This prevents the ‘car headlight effect’, where the eyes adapt to dark surroundings thus letting unnatural focused direct light to enter the eyes. Incidentally, this helps even with smaller screens and phones, so, hold the phone against to a well-lit wall or light floor, if you have to use it for long periods. Thirdly, the colour scheme of my display is either inverted (e.g. light text on dark) or has a darker background (no white backgrounds unless absolutely necessary, e.g. final rendering of images and text). I also sometimes use textured-paper-like backgrounds to break up bold text outlines and the extreme contrast between text/lines and backgrounds. Where convenient, I often use a sepia tint (Windows 11 night time setting) and larger fonts/zoom where possible.

If any of these first three conditions are not in place, I will get some degree of eyestrain. I now can work at home almost incessantly with all these workarounds. By this, I’ve also managed to isolate most of the other factors from the effect of dry eyes and (physical) stress-related fatigue (by which I mean the unnecessary tension many of us have when intensely concentrating). So, knowing the factors NOT involved if I STILL get eyestrain, I’ve now confirmed that eye pain can be caused by not blinking, not keeping the eyes well-lubricated, but this does not seem to cause the pain experienced when pressing on the eyeballs, which seems to due to converging the eyeballs (and perhaps prolonged focusing). Dry eyes initially presents itself as a hot feeling in the eyes, but I’ve recently acknowledged that I occasionally wake up and notice one eye is dry and the next day I have pain in that eye, so perhaps tear ducts can also dry up by not blinking enough(?) I also presume that twitching eyelids are triggered by the suppression of natural blinking(?) I have to say, observing the 20-20-20 rule does not seem to add anything to this set up, as I find it relaxing enough to look at a screen at this distance against a light background wall… no less relaxing that watching television. Anything remaining seems self-inflicted, so I’m trying to become mindful of bad habits while concentrating, namely blinking or shutting the eyes enough, using moisturising eyedrops, and releasing unnecessary physical tension, especially around the eyes, neck and head (deep breaths, etc). Hope that helps someone/anyone.

Personally hot towels and sauna help morethan anything ive ever tried. I notice my blood flow to my face isn't sufficient especially in winter so doing anything to stimulate blood flow extremely helps. Any muscle or organ of the body def appreciates sufficient blood flow and fresh oxygen!

Clue in the name “eye STRAIN” doing exercises is a no go as you are putting more load onto your eye muscles.

I’ve suffered chronically for 7 years with this and the only real way to alleviate symptoms is by resting the eyes E.G closing them and keeping them shut or sleeping.

It’s also important to make sure you are getting adequate sleep - atleast 8 hours uninterrupted as sleep deprivation will destroy them quicker.

is this the same with DELAYED EYE FOCUS? i experience that blurredness when i MOVE MY HEAD quickly.

for example, when i am running forward, and someone is calling me from behind, so i'll have to turn my head quickly to check who is calling me--- my vision turns blurred for 1-2 seconds before i can see clearly.

same thing happen if i move my head back to the looking forward position to continue running (blurred again for 1-2 seconds before i can see clearly)

same thing again happen when i look for something URGENTLY that i had to move my head and eyes fast so i can see the missing item as quick as possible. my eye focus cannot catch up and my vision turns blurred for even longer seconds (3-5 seconds or longer or i had to forcefully focus to see again)

is this ciliary/accomodation spasm too? or age related problem? digital eye strain? 😢

I AM STILL 31 YEARS OLD, and i dont have dry eyes. hope you can answer 🙏

Do you have a recommendation regarding the best "K" rating for overhead light bulbs in a small home office? I presently have 3,000 K bulbs and I've been told I'd do better with a 4,000 to 5,000 k bulbs. Any recommendations?

eyes are a muscle if you don’t train those muscles, then your vision gets blurry no need for glasses. Just train long distance and short distance for a while.

I have had serious issues with my eyes 👀 👀 double vision. The brock string helps to control it IF I maintain my exercises on a daily basis. I'm already 67, it affects seriously my quality of life when I want to read or to use my laptop for a relatively long while. I'm optimistic and hopefully it will get better and better until it's completely gone? Knock wood! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

I'm currently experiencing pretty bad eye fatigue from a long gaming session. I'm trying to get to sleep but it hurts. Took an ibuprofen to try and help because it's a bit painful. Didn't notice anything until i got off the game. This is very uncomfortable to say the least and I won't be gaming so long moving forward

Hi Dr. Allen,
It is great that you are reducing strain, to change your refractive state, from -0.75 Diopters to +0.25 Diopters.
Or from 20/50, to 20/20.
More people should follow your strain relief program and achieve the result I achieved.
Thank you!

So few eye doctors have any clue about vision therapy. I had severe convergence insufficiency and mentioned my vision issues to my optometrist (I saw one who worked out of a Lenscrafters). She told me it was nothing to worry about and it was just because I turned 40. It took several years for me to get it diagnosed by a chiropractor of all people who figured out my eyes were contributing to my dizziness. I really think testing for convergence insufficiency needs to be part of regular eye exams.
