Picking up his change is what he said... also Tom T. Hall was known as "The Storyteller". Check out "Faster Horses".

"The song is based on a real-life conversation Hall had with a 65-year-old Black man while performing in Miami at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. The man told Hall that these three things were the only things in life that were worth a dime. He also said that old dogs care about people even when they make mistakes."

Hey Britt, I noticed you said that you loved the storytelling. Tom T was known as the “Storyteller” for good reason. It’s almost like you’re listening to your grandpa tell life’s stories. You need to dig a little deeper into his songs. I thinks you’ll become a fan. Mr Hall was truly a gem in this town (Nashville) as well around the world.

Tom T. was the greatest storyteller of them all. What a beautiful way to describe an elderly grey-haired black gentleman who was trying to impart his lifetime of wisdom to a younger man drinking his life away in an airport lounge-- learn to value the pure things like old dogs, and children, and watermelon wine.
Ironsides was a TV detective show in maybe the late '60s or early 70s. Raymond Burr starred as a wheelchair-bound detective.

The classic country singers only tell stories in the songs. Like: Merle Hagard; Willie Nelson; George Jones; etc. Check out Merle Haggard's SING ME BA K HOME.

He was a black gentleman with gray hair. Simple as that. New subscriber, which I did because I feel you are honest. I met him once at the VP Fair in St. Louis. He was a great guy but (always a but) you had to stand about five feet away from him so you wouldn't get a contact drunk from his breath. I guess I met him before Johnny Cash had a talk with him. Actually, another song of his (I Love...) was the first song I ever sang in public. Story Tellers are the best...

It is so nice that you are discovering music that is as old (or older) than me. I am 56 and heard this song as a little child (first came out when I was about 4). Tom T Hall is a legend in country music. A super kind soul! Merle Haggard, Waylen Jennings, & many others from that era have made music I am sure you would love. God Bless!

When I was a teen, Tom T. Hall wrote, "Hello, VietNam" the opening music to the movie "Full Metal Jacket" Another artist sang it but it was one of Tom T.'s first big hits. A few years later it was a daily event for me to hear some other US Marine sarcastically say, "Goodbye, sweetheart. Hello, VietNam". 😁That man was one of the best storytellers in the business.

Lord have mercy honey. You unfortunately have missed crucial points in the song ie. “ iron sides “ was an old 70s movie depicting war of independence. Referring to a boat that had iron instead of normal wood structure ., these boats were able to withstand great battles.
The line later states says the old black gentleman at bar was picking up his remaining change.
Call me , im old, a hillbillyand know a fews things about old country , real country music.
