Directors Statement
We have always been fascinated with the idea of telling a fairy tale in a modern setting. After passings in our respective families, we were drawn to exploring grief as a theme and found the fairy tale to be the perfect framework for this.

On one of our many cinema trips, we saw ‘Here Before’ (2021) which had Niamh Dornan as the young daughter in the film. By the films end we knew we would be writing our lead with Niamh in mind. Cut to six months later, after having secured Niamh as “Belle” - suddenly the film felt very real.

The dream casting of Niamh also informed our cinematic language of the film. We chose to shoot in a 4:3 aspect ratio to help immerse the audience in Belle's world. We wanted Belle to fill the frame as much as we could. We always wanted to present the film as a fairy tale seen through a child’s eyes, with the film’s tone and colour palette chosen to achieve a dreamy/nostalgic feel.

As filmmakers, we have always been interested in playing with genre, which is why we employ a tonal shift from drama to horror by the film’s end. We found horror to be the ultimate genre in our exploration of grief, specifically in its directness. We believe our end encapsulates the overwhelmingness of death in one final confrontation.

The film will always be special to us as it was our first foray into filmmaking together as a team, and hopefully the first of many.
