Wow, I was surprised to come across this little gem. Really enjoyed the conversation between you two. It's a rare opportunity for myself to see such a senior exec like Mr. LaFehr have a friendly informal chat with a close family friend. Baytex's little Gemini pilot plant in Alberta was the first O&G facility I worked at when I started in the industry. Much has changed with the company over the years. I bought Baytex stocks back in 2014 when I was there and watched the share prices collapsed shortly after the unfortunate-timed Aurora acquisition and the company became debt-ladened as under the previous CEO as Mr. LaFehr mentioned.
Ed really inherited a bad situation and accomplished a historical comeback. By purchasing Raging River in 2018, he allowed the company to survive (and just barely on life support) through the low oil price days, and his holistic management guided the company through even the toughest of times during COVID and came out much stronger on the other end. During COVID at one point I checked my shares and they were down 99%! Under Ed they went from a -99% loss to over 100+% gains. It was a sad day for myself when I saw him step down as CEO.
Appreciate the insights you got him to share during this podcast, from how he navigated his career, his strategy on developing the next generation, his take on climate policies of the future, etc. I eagerly await what future guests you have on the show! Maybe even your father since Ed hyped him up quite a bit here haha.
Cheers.
