So, it had fuel. Have you ever heard of someone on an empty tank? I have suffered that dumb situation prsonally. Luckily, without bad rsults.
ОтветитьJuan, I love your channel and your content. I truly believe you're saving future lives with this information. I would love to see more videos like this documenting close calls where the pilot did things correctly to the best of their ability to save the day.

ОтветитьAs a Member of The NHRA Safety Safari, which I wasn’t a part of this Race at the time, we are Always in a hurry to Any Incident or place of injury.
The Guys are Fantastic! Safety To Others.
Nobody evens hesitates in these situations, I should know, I am one of them- it is who we are- many times stuff is flying as we react to the situation.
The quality in us is usually detected when regular people stand to assess the situation but we have this quality that we are moving and thinking, many times knowing what to do and reaching for our radios.
Do you think the pilot was offguard and not expecting an airshow in front of a landing field?
Probably should change the flight path or close the airfield during airshows next time
they just want to shut down all the race tracks in California
Ответитьcould be the lowest speed crash the safety safari have rolled out to in a while....
ОтветитьA 1967 model? It's time for an upgrade.
ОтветитьQuick shoutout to the guy in the stands yelling "Hey, Hey, Hey". Every little bit helps
ОтветитьThe guy with the camper on the right was on Facebook complaining that they wouldn't let him haul his trailer off right after the accident. Welcome to the NTSB.
ОтветитьI'll take an in and out burger and an of order fries.
Ответитьair traffic control has to be a daunting job.
ОтветитьBusted first thought was fuel
ОтветитьSo the Goodyear blimp called it in? If so, I'm surprised it would be operating that close to an airport.
ОтветитьIn one airborne shot, you notice a propane gas tank siting right next to the airplane. How amazingly lucky the occupants of plane, and RVs, where...and the vehicles.
ОтветитьA drag race was a good choice to belly on . All of those fire responders and ambulance staff looking for something to do 😅
ОтветитьJuan’s talk about fuel management on this aircraft reminded me of the scene in “The Spirit of St. Louis” starring James Stewart, when his engine is fuel starved and he exclaims to himself “Switch to one with some gas in it!!!” (not suggesting anything about this incident btw). So glad no fatalities on this incident.
ОтветитьUp until a few years ago there was an additional grandstand in that very location where the rvs park now right at the 1/4 mile finish line. Watched many planes on their approach while enjoying a day at the drags. I believe the dragstrip was there before brackett air field.
ОтветитьWow, he was right there - he almost made it.
ОтветитьI have a bit over 3000hrs in my '69 six. Fuel management is crucial.
I'm on my 3rd pillar point low fuel detector. This is a prism I have installed at fuel selector that detects the smallest air bubble with a beep and light flashing. Changing the tank immediately, I can see the small amount of air go through the engine via the EGT rise and a fuel pressure fluctuation. No audible change in engine.
It's a real life saver. I will often run a tank dry at altitude by myself to ensure the device still works.
10 years ago with a full plane and my wife in the back seat, she said "..... I think you ran a tank dry." I did by mistake ...... no one else knew. My wife knew what the beep meant.
On forced landings without power, the descent rate is 1700fpm and more if heavy. It's eyes outside and this pilot did a great job.
No better place for witnesses to how an engine is running than a bunch of motor heads.
ОтветитьI don't think this has been mentioned put the T-6s were there for a fly over during the National Anthem prior to the start of the Drag Race.
ОтветитьI'm rethinking my comments on the LA Times story of this crash that quoted a first responder: "Torres said hazardous materials crews responded to mitigate spilled jet fuel." If he is correct, is it possible the crash aircraft was mis-fueled with jet fuel? The jet fuel, if it was actually "jet fuel" might have been in the tank the pilot switched to prior to landing. I have 37 years experience as an aviation professional and am fully aware that jet fuel trucks/tanks have unique nozzles to prevent mis-fueling. Is it possible that jet fuel was in a vendor's tank of avgas? Or, a seldom used jet fuel truck that had not been properly equipped with the proper nozzle? I am really looking forward to Juan's coverage of the initial NTSB report.
ОтветитьI lived in Pomona for 30yrs, Brackett Field Airport is in LaVerne not Pomona.
ОтветитьI was top row, far end in corner of grandstands photographing the flyovers, noticed this plane jump in line and put down my camera. The engine was def. sputtering... Watched the whole thing happen, hit the truck, etc. I've been asked why I didn't take pics of the actual incident. In that moment, I didn't want to take pictures of what I thought was about to happen. So surreal to see that take place. Like others have said, if it's going to happen, couldn't have happened in a better spot with all of the first responders. There were 2 ladder trucks across the track with FD members sitting atop watching the races. Thank you to all of the first responders that acted so quickly
ОтветитьI guess they wanted a Dubble Dubble
ОтветитьLucky no one was in that truck
ОтветитьThanks, Juan.
ОтветитьI wouldn’t call that terrible camera work “capturing” anything
ОтветитьCat litter is used primarily for oil spills
ОтветитьAttempted manslaughter charges for pilot, he didn't know who was in the vehicles he aimed for.
ОтветитьSUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAAAAAAAY!!!
ОтветитьThe Cherokee 6 doesn't glide, it falls like a piano with a dead engine. It surprised the hell out of me how terrible it is after my first simulated engine failure.
ОтветитьAirplanes always crash there at Pomona.
ОтветитьThank God NO human fatalities in this crash...but Juan is acting a little strange trying to account for the missing ln & Out burgers and curly hot cheese fries(!) Juan? Is there something (belch!) you'd like to tell us about them burger-furgers disappearing? It's OK, we all still love ya! ;-)
ОтветитьI was staying in the Iconic trailer. The plane had a ton of fuel on board. After the initial impact many people were rushing toward the crash and i was yelling at them to stay back because i thought the fuel was going to ignite and make the situation much worse. I also would like to know if the pilot intentionally hit the vehicles to scrub energy. If he was just feet higher and did not hit the truck I and others probably would not have survived. Truely unbelievable this was not a much worse situation.
ОтветитьIt would suck to come back to your truck and find out it's been crunched by an airplane, but I personally would take a little comfort from the fact that it was there to dissipate some of the energy of that crash.
A link to an NBC4 article I found on the ASN page says there was fuel spilled but emergency crews acted quickly to prevent an outbreak of fire.
Never happened.
ОтветитьThanks. Be interested in cause. I used to fly PA32 & PA32R.
ОтветитьHe didn’t land “just short of the runway.”
He wasn’t even lined up with the runway, he was approaching it diagonally.
He landed just short of a couple of RVs.
Juan makes it sound as if the pilot had it all under control and planned out. The last place I would plan to land would be in a parking lot full of vehicles and motor homes. A miracle he didn’t kill everyone on board.
This really scares me - started to learn to fly for my PPL. And I live near Brackett and Cable airports...
ОтветитьI cannot imagine having to deal with that right on final with basically no power. But we know from the Swiss Cheese Model and four separate fuel tanks, that there were FOUR different ways that engine could cut out on Final. Not good odds! I wonder if this aircraft model has experienced similar incidents. Only the NTSB will find out.
My only question is could the pilot have safely turned and landed in one of the avenues or strip itself? But there was virtually no time for the pilot to ascertain that.
Will you cover the crash of the DHL plane in Europe today?
ОтветитьMiracle!😮❤
ОтветитьExtremely lucky!
ОтветитьSorry sir, but you’ll have to compete in “Naturally Aspirated Fixed Wing Super Stock” class. Please wait your turn.
Jokes aside, other than an airport you can’t crash in a better place when it comes to people trained to respond to vehicle crashes and fuel fires.
Thank god everyone was ok. That’s my airport. I’ve landed in 26L and 26R many many times. You fly right over the raceway and fairgrounds. I’ve read about airplanes clipping the lines as well casing some crashes. That’s definitely an area you have to monitor your altitude very closely as you always should, but still.
ОтветитьAnd once again, you can’t see a f….king thing because someone thinks they’re a professional videographer, filming with only 25% of the screen visible!!!!
ОтветитьNo fire no fuel power off glide
Ответитьi saw this plane fly across the glide path of the last AT texan then bank left towards the grandstands and crash about 100 feet behind me . divine intervintion is what saved me, not some bullshit pilot skill. !!!
