The Comanche were particularly brutal and savage. There are several narratives about them across my 6 generations of family in Texas. (If these nomadic native pirates had really understood 19th century Anglo Texan culture, they might have moved on towards the desert southwest.) Great vid, thanks for posting. God Bless Texas!!

I don't cry for the American Indians ever. They were hyper-violent towards other tribes as well, and it went on for millennia before Europeans arrived. Torture, rape and murder were the rule and not the exception with the North American tribes. They weren't peaceful, "noble" savages at all.

Having read many narratives by explorers and others who were among the first to make contact with the indigenous tribes of North America, I learned that women were not treated at all well. They were essentially slaves to the men and did every menial chore in camp and were continuously raped without regard. When on the move, women, children and dogs were treated as pack animals. Men would sometimes wrestle over who would rape what girl, and the concept of "romantic love" did not exist. Just envy, jealousy, and craven violent lust. After victorious battles against other tribes or whites, the children too small to be immediately useful as slave labour were killed outright, unless the ghastly manner of murdering them could elicit shock and horror from other captives awaiting their fate, much to the delight of the native women. Men were often turned over, trussed, to the women of the tribe who took great delight inflicting pain while drawing out the torture that eventually killed them. Maybe they (rightly) took out their hatred of men (for the way they were treated) on their bound captives.
All that said, it is possible that the Comanche who dragged tortured and mutilated 16 year old Matilda Lockhart into town and demanding concessions for her release had no idea the white menfolk would regard Matilda with any more compassion than they treated their own girls and women. Just a little context to keep in mind, when you read such understatements as "when a hostage surrender did not go according to plan..."

"Of the 16 hostages the Texians were determined to recover, 13 were tortured to death as soon as the news of the Council House Fight reached the outraged Comanches. The captives, including Matilda Lockhart's six-year-old sister, suffered slow roasting among other tortures."
You can use all the cultural relativism of the world, but people that roast to death innocent children are nothing but degenerate scum.

Whatever you want to say about the Europeans or "colonizers" the natives were worse in every capacity — they laughed while skinning children alive then slowly roasting them over a fire as they cried in transcendent agony... if you aren't glad to see such a people wiped from existence, then you're either a psychopath, a sadist, or both.

How can we know that the white captives were 'roasted alive'? Did this really happen, or was this story merely rumour and disinformation to further an agenda?

The way we treated the Indians was shameful. Listening to these stories, I wonder who was the animal? The Indians were protecting their home and the white man was the invader. I guess all is fair in war, and this was war. Thank you 💛 for this.

It's amazing how history can be changed over time. Matilda Lockhart did not have a sister that was taken with her and was she killed by the Indians. She was not from San Antonio but from Gonzales County close to present day Cuero Texas. 4 Putman children were taken that day. My Great Grandfather 5 Mitchel Putman was at the Council house fight. The Indians offered to bring in all the captured children. They only produced three children. Matilda. a Mexican boy and one Negro boy. The Indians hide bows and arrows under their buckskin clothes according to my Great Grandfather 5 Putman. They pulled out their bows and arrows and began to shoot them into they Texans as the fight broke out. There were many eye witness accounts that were written down on that day. My Great Grandfather rode from Gonzales to San Antonio because the Indians promised to release all captives. My Grandfather 5 said he grabbed his Kentucky long rifle and bowie knife jumped on his horse and rode with hope. He told how he hoped he would see his children again but knew the Indians were liars. After seeing Matilda in her condition he worried that his oldest daughter Roda who was 14 years old could have met with the same fate. Matilda told the Texans that the Indians were no telling the truth about not having any more captive which is why the Texans told the Chief that they would be held until the children were returned. That's when the Chief let out a war cry and the fight began. Old Paint Caldwell was outside when the fight broke out and was unarmed when an Indian shot him in the leg. He grabbed the rifle away from the Indian and beat him to death with it. he then put his back against the wall of the Council House and fought off Indians with the rifle and rocks. Old Paint lived to fight another day. Fact: The Indians were armed with knifes, bows and arrows as well as some rifles. They offered the treaty and they offered to return all the captives. Fact: Matilda had no sister that was taker or killed by Indians.
