Dr O'Donovan explains SCABIES

WHAT IS SCABIES?

Scabies is an itchy skin rash caused by a tiny burrowing mite called Sarcoptes scabiei. Intense itching occurs in the area where the mite burrows. The need to scratch may be stronger at night.

Scabies is contagious and can spread quickly through close person-to-person contact in a family, child care group, school class, nursing home or prison. Because scabies spreads so easily, health care providers often recommend treating the entire family or any close contacts.

SYMPTOMS OF SCABIES:

Scabies symptoms include:

1. Itching, often severe and usually worse at night
2. Thin, wavy tunnels made up of tiny blisters or bumps on the skin

TREATMENT OF SCABIES:

Scabies is easily treated. Medicated skin creams (E.G. Permethrin) or pills kill the mites that cause scabies and their eggs. But itching may not stop for many weeks after treatment.

Damn scabies mites were sent from hell, for those who don't know the itching and rash many times starts on your fingers you'll also find lines where they are borrowing under the skin they love fingers wrists and migrate to other parts at night the itch is severe I had to take something to get sleep. Sulfur soap clove oil help kill them clove also numbs itching some I mixed a few drops with aloe Vera gel hot baths or showers made the itch worse so warm is best hope this helps

The natural remedies make sense sinse thats what is recommended for bugs in general. Clove oil neem oil peppermint oil, turmeric all mixed in coconut oil to apply. I also remember that using clear nail polish on top of chiggers helped kill them since they are also under the skin and it smothers them so they can't breathe. No one has mentioned that with skin mites though but it's the same concept.

Use rid shampoo! It will kill them in a day or two. (Made for lice.) I had them for WEEKS and thought they were on the carpet/floor in my place. I sprayed the HELL out of it with bug spray. THEN I found out they were on ME which was scary. 1-2 Rid shampoo all over my body and they were GONE.

I got infected from staying over at a friend’s house.

I used Permethrin every 12 hours for 3 days due to a miscommunication from my doctor.

I then stopped and took another dose 7 days after the last time I had took it. Initially it got better but then started appearing again.

I applied another dose of permethrin yesterday (2 weeks after my second dose) and feel a bit better. I have started to take a cetirizine tablet every morning and night before going to sleep. I also wash myself with sulphur soap which I let to sit on my body around 6-7 mins when I take shower.

I have done everything I possibly could, washed all my clothes frequently in 90 degrees water + my bedding, towels even my sofa linings.

Mine was horrible as I developed 2 blisters on my penis and 2 on my testicles. My private part was swollen and other areas of my body such as groin, legs including feet, tommy and my arms and wrists were itchy and affected.

Due to the condition with the private part my GP sent me for STI 3 times (once private + twice NHS GUM clinics) despite me telling them I have not had sex with anyone for past 14 months. (My gf studies in another country)

I randomly got diagnosed by an Egyptian doctor in the hospital.

However, here is what I need to say. England is a beautiful country and I feel privileged to have lived here the past 11 years but the doctors are horrendously bad!! I am an engineer but I still have more medical knowledge than my GP or an NHS staff. This is bad!

For those that have used permethrin (including the washing remedies etc), this can be a sign that the specific scabies in your body is resistant against permethrin. (This is the part that most GPs and doctors in England miss)

If permethrin proves ineffective, you need to try Ivermectin. Just like permethrin but ivermectin is a tablet and FDA approved. Take one and then wait seven days before taking the next dose. Please take all the house remedies seriously meanwhile to avoid re-infestation.

My gf is a medical intern and is bringing me these tablets next week when we meet as you cant get them without prescription in the UK and my doctor is not educated enough to do this for me.

I will let you know how it goes in the future.

Please note, everyone in your household needs to be treated same day as you and preferably at the same time even if they dont show symptoms.

Little did I know, but I had scabies on and off for 18 months. I saw a dermatologist and despite checking me all over with his magnifying glass he did not diagnose the condition. I had very few rashes or bumps, but had intensive itching (particularly at night), occasionally sensitive skin when in the sun and often had goosebumps and chills. Strangely enough, the only thing that provided temporary relief from the itching was a very hot bath!? In the end, I took 2x treatments of Permethrin, 2x treatments of Ivermectin, but the game changer seemed to be 2x treatments of Malathion. In addition all clothes were changed daily, bagged up for 3x days or washed at high temperatures. All bedding was changed every other day - believe me this felt like some sort of super variant that made my life hell, so don't underestimate it!
