Thanks for this solution. It worked on my A6000. No more overheating problems. Two things I want to add to this though:

1. I noticed that there is enough room for a 2mm thick silicone pad between the motherboard and the back plate, so I put two layers of 1mm thick pad instead (the silicone pad bought from eBay is large enough for this). I assume this gives more heatsinking capacity.

2. If one only wants to fix the overheating problem, it is not needed to disconnect the LCD ribbon from the motherboard.
Gently lift the back plate off the main chassis and carefully flip it over towards the top to expose the motherboard .

Again, thanks a lot! It is a huge deal!

Sony use the same design & built Philosophy of a Cellphone......

Remember High End Chipset like Qualcomm used in Samsung/ other android brands Flagship also had overheating problems.......
But they achieved Huge Success in the Market because its Feature Rich in Compact Body...

I wish Sony use Bigger Body & Bigger Heatpipe..... this Nex/A6xxx too small for pro photographer anyway...

I like your logic & replace non sticky Thermal Pad with the Thicker Sticky Thermal Pad (better thermal transfer) to the metal heat spreader.

Nice brilliant idea.

But I think your Thermal Pad Size were too big, since it can be very sticky, melting a little bit, all over your logic board (in long period)

IMHO, You actually just need it to cut it as big as your chip size

Unfortunately this did not work for me! I just finished the job and I tested the camera. It worked only for 20 minutes before overheating. Have you got any idea why?

The solution worked!

It did overheat a few times during a 5 hour video recording period but here was the situation.

1. Recording done outdoors in summer with 82 degrees. no wind.
2. Done under direct sunlight, no shades, no trees, no umbrella.
3. it recorded on the average 15 minutes before it shut off.
4. a wireless remote receiver was attached
5. LCD was off but camera attached to HDMI monitor
6. AF enabled, auto focus continuous tracking
7. the LCD was pulled out slightly about 5mm (hoping it would improve ventilation of the back plate).

I think the direct sunlight, 82 degrees outside temp, and no wind heated the camera body too much that all heatsinking efforts were simply useless (it is hotter outside than inside the camera). In retrospect, I guess a white a6000 would have faired better.

My suggestion: since scenes are recorded mostly in a few minutes, turn off the camera in between takes. My camera overheated because I forgot to turn it off even when I was not recording and the sun was heating it up continuously. Also, using an umbrella would help. If you are planning to buy a6000 for use mostly outdoors in hot temps under direct sunlight, buy the white a6000 (and add the heatsinks described here).

My rig consists of a6000 mounted on a 3-axis gimbal which itself is mounted on a steadicam. I am considering mounting a "shade" above the gimbaled camera.

Can you do a video showing how to replace sony a6000 LCD only(not the whole screen)? I cracked my LCD and I wanted to replace it with the $20-30 LCD you can get from Ebay but there's no instruction for it whatsoever.

i just killed the cable of the lcd :( i broke a bit and its not working anymore. fortunately aliexpress has it for 30bucks. I think the lcd shouldnt need to be removed only fold up to fix the termal pad. This process needs to be fixed if you are working with your a6000 as a videographer. peace

I followed these instructions verbatim. I really appreciate you creating this video! :~) Unfortunately, my LCD is now black. I ordered a new replacement LCD and it too is black. It looks as if I fried a portion of the video circuitry on the logic board? I did notice that when you swapped out the heat shield, you didn't cover the circuitry completely from the LCD input (the ribbon from the video input/output slot is now exposed, thus touching the copper shielding on the back of the LCD bracket when snapping everything back together.) Could this be the cause? If that is the case then your example should've created the same result. Totally confused. On the fence here. Should I order a new a6000 body, logic board, or LCD monitor #3? The viewfinder works fine, but I accidentally went in the menu and swapped the viewfinder with the LCD monitor to see if that would bring the LCD monitor to life. To no avail. I now have no viewfinder (due to changing menu setting change I can't get back to changing it back to viewfinder!) The rabbit hole is deepening. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :~)

I use that same blue stuff at work, we cut it up in squares that perfectly fit over the chips, and use double sided heat tape to secure plastic push wedges on the surface thats gonna lay on top of the chip to keep pressure on the squares. That blue stuff NEVER gets warm. If you light it with fires its just melts away without a flame, its great stuff.

Just fixed my a6000 today I wasn't able to get the full sized thermal pad you have here in Nigeria, but I used the size that is about the size of the chips. I have not removed the 30 minutes limit, but so far, I have rolled xavc-s, 30minutes, three times without even a warning sign. Thanks for this video, you have really helped, I was almost considering another camera cos of this issue, cos I shoot event videos and it was unusable before now.
