Show a medieval person the little man walking around inside of a flat rectangle powered by fancy sand and try telling them that it's not magic.

Magic is a stretch goal, plenty of what we do now would be considered as magic through most of human history 🤷🏼‍♂️

Could you analyze the magic from "The Irregular at the Magic High School" (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei)? It's quite a different approach from other magic systems as it's more of a second science in that universe. Magic is programmed, fuelled by specific particles, and behaves more like trying to describe a process instead of altering reality at will. For example, when moving an egg from one table to another, you need to specify every step. If you lift the egg, you need to define when it will stop because otherwise, it will keep moving upwards, just like if you don't stop the egg before describing it to go down, it will just fall and break.
They even explain how magic violates the law of conservation of energy. I like this system better than Full Metals mainly because its approach is closer to real-life science, not only in execution but also when creating, documenting, and categorizing magic and materials that interact with magic.

What I like about arcanes science is the ability to give instructions to an energy source through magical runes that hold meaning to said power source. But that gets us to the celestials and league of legends lore thats too deep to explore here.

So, Hex crystals could NOT be antimater without anyhillating itself, so the crystals are some kind of "magic" device the contains a drop of antimatter inside and allows to manage its energy releaso to be used as an energy source... right?

I was gonna write a book and have it that magic was a sci fi thingy and the inscriptions/magic circles were just code cause i remember hearing someone saying that mathematics was the language of the universe so idk if that would work but like a big boarder for it would be that its in a specific language that is not yet known or some shtik like that ill sort it out eventually like maybe the code is what made up the universe and you can try to bend the code but it will mess some stuff up somewhere

I cant recall who said that but I love the following (not exact) quote: A sufficiently advanced technology/State of science can only be thought of as magic by those who do not understand it.
Flying and travelling into space would appear as magic to people just a couple hundred years ago. I believe the reason why we will never find Magic is partially due to our way of thinking.
Magic would not be a certain form of matter, force or energy, but the specific use and the things you can achieve with it/the control you can exert over matter/energy/forces, that was previously thought of as impossible, therefore making it magic. If we did/observed something we do not understand, we would not think of it as magical, but seek to understand it and every detail about it, eliminating the possibility of magic by our way of thinking about it.

Would love to hear your oppinion on this take.

Here's what I think. Arcane in general means magic and magic does exist. The genuine real life magic goes by a different name. If you look at the history of the terminology, you see that philosophy and sorcery were synonyms and technically, they still are. People often differentiate between the two by stating that sorcery is the more fantasy version of philosophy which it currently is but they science in sci-fi is still called science so sorcery is philosophy and science is magic. The origin of mages is the exact same as a scientist or any other type of philosophy but mages tend to be more fantastical. Historically, a mage is just an old wise person who has tinkered and studied about the world and thus made weapons, machines, etc. Leonardo Da Vinci seems similar to a mage because he was one. Arcane in the show however is just a source of high energy. It's slightly more just a source of energy because users could use it to do more than they could with any other source of energy. Victor was able to alter people's minds and bodies. Echo could turn back time. It's like an energy with extra features

I just always imagine the plausibility of these as a regular universe, somehow working the same way, but with an additional type of energy, that responds to consciousness. A more realistic, but extremely pessimistic rendition of that is The Warp from Warhammer 40k.

But in the end - magic is always a spiritual thing. And that ties into your worldview. Do you think that we are only matter? There's all kinds of evidence against it - philosophical arguments, documented and verified NDE experiences, supposed Alien abductions, resulting in actual ptsd, and people stopping experiencing them through calling to Jesus. (yes, believe it or not - that's an actual thing)

So if the spiritual world exists, there are more things we can do than just what we have in the material universe... тhe question becomes is what is that and why? And why dont' we have access to them right now and here? People have tried throughout history, and while the 99% of stories and books on esotric topics are actual BS, there seems to be something behind it. All of the times something bad though. There's a ton of testimonies of ex-satanists, ex-witches, ex-shamans and so on that if you believe even 5% would make you skin crawl.

I'd much more like it to be like in Arcane, but sociopaths and psycopaths are doing enough damage with bad ol' violence alone... So for the cool stuff... I'd wait on science. Maybe someday we will actually figure out FTL and portals. Fun fact: in the Bible, when God sees people constructing the tower of Babel, he says “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them." I very much like the interpretation that with enough time and effort we can actually do anything. Yeah. Including all the sci-fi concepts.

Kyle, can an electromagnet torus in the shape of a moebius strip(ring?), create a klein bottle? If a klein bottle is a moebius strip that has had the edges pulled together, then would that be performed by the magnetic flux lines. Since a klein bottle flows through itself, would that be able to allow it to be used as magnetic containment of a fusion plasma and producing thrust for a fusion drive?

Problem is people compare Magic and Science as if they are the same type of thing when they are not. Magic is a property of the universe where as Science is simply a methodology for unlocking those properties. We use the Scientific method to unlock the properties of chemical interactions and call it Chemistry. We use science to unlock the properties of matter and call it physics. And so on.

Magic is like Dark Matter and Dark Energy. It's a name place holder we use for something we don't really understand even though we can observe it's affects. Magic seems to break the laws of physics only because we don't fully understand those laws. Just like how someone with no concept of Electro-Magnetic waves would see a Radio or TV suddenly creating sounds and images out of thin air. Much of our technology would appear as magic to primitive societies as it would break their fundamental understanding of the universe.

Magic is just a catch all term for the unknown forces of the universe. Just as we use Dark Matter and Dark Energy as placeholders now I doubt we will continue to call them that once we figure out what they are and likely name them after whoever discovers them much like has happened with many other theorized yet unproven in their time concepts. Thus the two terms will likely fall by the way side once we understand them.

However Magic being a broader term that is an all encompassing term will forever remain out of reach because that is what it means. As we strip away the mysteries of the universe and unlock more of it's odd behaviors not seen in normal day life, such as super conductors, super fluids that flow uphill, and heck Quantum entanglement ignores the speed of light and is pretty Magical but we just considered another property to be observed and cataloged. There are many other strange occurrences we see as we increase our understanding of the universe and it's properties thus no longer considering it to be unknown or Magical to the point if we were to find "Magic" we would just catalog it along with every other property discovered and not call it Magic.

Sci-fi worlds with Warp Drives, Laser Swords, Anti-gravity, and so on are all Magic to us but treated as science in such settings as they understand the underlying properties of their universe to such a degree they can harness them. Where as Fantasy world those properties are often less understood thus referred to as Magic and portrayed as chaotic which could be likely due to a lack of understanding more than it actually being chaotic. Which is pretty much Chaos Theory where small changes in initial conditions can lead to wildly different outcomes thus giving the appearance of chaos and unpredictability.

This inherent unknown implied with Magic is what allows fantasy writers to add physical properties to their world that we do not see in our own and hand wave the difference by calling it "Magic". It allows us to suspend our disbelief as Magic is by it's very nature the realm of the unknown. Science is the world of the known and our understanding of that world. Magic is the unknown beyond that as it is like the Horizon, forever out of reach because no matter how far you go it remains off in the distance as it's not a real location but a matter of perspective, that which is unknown as once it is known it ceases to be Magic. Pretty much Death's speech at the end of Hogfather (Discworld).

I know this is about Arcane, but have you read "The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O."? Neal Stephenson actually tried to create a somewhat scientifically plausible concept on how magic could exist based on the observer effect in quantum physics. The book is pretty good and would be a good follow up episode concept.
